Do you Remember The Time?
Do you Remember The Time?
Do you remember the time? When Michael Jackson was the king of pop? When he had an easy media ride, more money than anyone, and a devil-may-care attitude? Michael Jackson is a figure who could be compared with the harlequin of the 19th century hes a total clown on the outside, very privately troubled on the inside. The only difference would be that today's media and information age has unraveled any weave of privacy former entertainers used to carry, and now the choice made in favor of being an international spectacle is a choice of living without window shades. Michael never had the chance to choose this, as he was born in. And the apparent shortcomings of his upbringing are now a part of the spectacle too, as are his financial and legal troubles. Carrying the show with him wherever and however he goes, Michael Jackson is never short of spectacle, and always seems to be prepared for it, even in disaster. This piece depicts Michael as a multi-faceted personality with the true carnival of his life (or Neverland Ranch) behind him, stepping forward with mixed, conflicted emotions. Yet in catching the viewer's eye, the spectacle is back, as is the smile, the hair, and facial features. He glimmers in this gaze for a moment, but as the world around him challenges this outlook, it finds its way through his sparkling visage. Can the king of pop stay afloat in the world he has created around him? UPDATE:: 6/25/09 Rest in peace, Michael. Thank you so much for your contributions to our lives and the American culture.
